The Rolex Air-King

A piece of aviation history, the Oyster Perpetual Air-King is a Rolex watch born for the skies.

The Rolex Air-King is an heir to the original Rolex Oyster, which accompanied pilots during flying’s golden age in the 1930s. The exceptional reinterpretation of this Rolex watch brings that iconic period to life with modern Rolex innovation.

Aeronautical Heritage

In 2016 Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Air-King, a watch that perpetuates the aeronautical heritage of the original Rolex Oyster. The new Air-King, with a 40 mm case in Oystersteel, features a distinctive black dial with a combination of large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking the hours and a prominent minute scale for navigational time readings. The dial bears the name Air-King in the same lettering that was designed specially for the model in the 1950s.

The new Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King symbolises Rolex watches’ privileged bond with the world of aviation.

In the 1930s spectacular progress in aircraft performance expanded humanity’s capacity to conquer the skies, leading to the introduction of long-distance flights. One of the pioneers of this era, English aviator Charles Douglas Barnard, set a number of flight records. Of the Rolex Oyster, he said: “The peculiar qualities of this Rolex watch render it eminently suitable for flying purposes and I propose to use it on all my long-distance flights in the future.”

In 1933, Rolex’s Swiss made watches accompanied the Houston Expedition as it made the first-ever flight over Mount Everest at an altitude exceeding 33,000 feet in extreme weather conditions. Today, these new Rolex watches for men pay tribute to those pioneers of flight – and showcase the unforgettable role these Rolex men’s watches played in the epic story of aviation.

The dial on these Rolex watches bears the name ‘Air-King’ in the same lettering that was designed specially for the model in the 1950s.

It is also adorned with the green and yellow Rolex logo – the first appearance of this classic logo on a dial. The seconds hand is green, the emblematic colour of the brand. These luxury watches feature a 40 mm case in Oystersteel with a magnetic shield. They have a distinctive black dial with a combination of large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking the hours and a prominent minute scale for navigational time readings.

These tests are carried out on fully assembled Rolex watches in order to guarantee superlative performance on the wrist.
