WATCHES & WONDERS: IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN
A journey that began in 1936 and has progressed in parallel with the aviation industry begins its next chapter here at ‘Watches & Wonders’ 2021… The IWC Pilot’s collection.

One of the most iconic collections of timepieces from the Schaffhausen-based manufacture, IWC’s Pilot’s Watches demonstrate the brand’s extensive experience and expertise in manufacturing precise, robust instruments for the cockpit.

A selection of exciting new additions have taken flight for 2021 and it is DMR’s pleasure to introduce you to some of our favourite pieces today.

IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43

From utilitarian tool watch to cultural icon, the Big Pilot’s Watch embodies all the expertise IWC Schaffhausen has amassed over the years through developing and manufacturing professional instruments for the cockpit.

Today, IWC adds a new chapter to the success story of the Big Pilot. Introducing the Big Pilot’s Watch 43, an authentic interpretation of the iconic design, without either a date window or a power reserve display. Featuring a 43mm stainless steel case for enhanced ergonomics and wearability, the collection now contains three new additions.

In stainless steel, the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 now features a blue dial with calfskin strap or stainless steel bracelet, and a black dial with complimenting brown calfskin strap.

Powering the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 is the IWC-manufactured 82100 calibre. This automatic movement has been engineered with a focus on maximum precision and reliability and, when fully wound, the mainspring stores 60 hours of power.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41

‘Watches & Wonders’ also heralds the introduction of the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41, a mainstay in the IWC Pilot’s Watch collection. This new collection allows the wearer to choose between striking blue or green dials, worn on either calfskin leather straps or a stainless steel bracelet.

Underscoring the brand’s expertise in the development of precise, in-house movements, the new IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre, which is visible through a sapphire glass back. The 69385 calibre boasts an impressive power reserve of 46 hours.

IWC Big Pilot’s “Mojave Desert” Editions

Continuing its series of TOP GUN models in sand-coloured ceramic, 2021 sees the first use of the material for the Big Pilot’s Watch. Two variations are introduced, the Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert”, along with the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar.

Subdued dark brown dials, sand-coloured hands and rubber straps, add to the eye-catching military-inspired design of the collection. Both of the new models are powered by movements from the IWC-manufactured 52000 calibre family.

Look to the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” for a true example of the manufacturer’s watchmaking expertise. The ingenious mechanical program automatically recognises different month lengths and leap years and was developed in the early 1980s by IWC’s former head watchmaker Kurt Klaus.

The moon phase display correctly depicts the moon phase for the northern and southern hemispheres, requiring adjustment by only one day after 577.5 years! Because its displays are perfectly synchronised, the calendar can be advanced easily via a single crown. The calendar module, constructed from 82 individual parts and featuring a four-digit year display, is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52615 calibre, and boasts a 7-day power reserve. Production of the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” will be limited to just 150 pieces per year.
