OMEGA celebrates 50 years of the “Silver Snoopy Award”

OMEGA celebrates 50 years of the “Silver Snoopy Award”
OMEGA’s space legacy has continued to gain them international acclaim, ever since the Speedmaster became the first watch to be worn on the Moon. But this acclaim has not only drawn the credit of its loyal, horological following.

In 1970, OMEGA received the coveted “Silver Snoopy Award” from NASA, recognising their unique contribution to space exploration, as well as the Speedmaster’s vital support during the endangered Apollo 13 mission.

50 years to the day that they were presented with this prestigious award, OMEGA releases a special timepiece, created in the occasion’s honour. Combining animation with watchmaking art, this special Snoopy tribute has taken the OMEGA Speedmaster to new realms of design.

The iconic four-legged friend plays a prominent role within this new timepiece, first appearing as an embossed silver medallion on the blue sub dial at 9 o’clock. Wearing his famous spacesuit, Snoopy is pictured in the exact style of the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to recipients of the “Silver Snoopy Award”. The dial itself is also silver and laser engraved with Ag925. As well as blue PVD angle-shaped hour markers and hands, the watch also includes two more blue sub dials.

But it is on the caseback that this timepiece really comes to life! This time, Snoopy has gone into orbit, thanks to his animated black and white Command and Service Module (CSM) on a magical hand. As the chronograph seconds hand is in use, Snoopy takes a special journey around the mysterious far side of the moon – just like the Apollo 13 crew – with the lunar surface being decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation.

In the distance, home is in sight. The Earth disc rotates once per minute, in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand, symbolising the precise rotation of the Earth. The iconic quote, “Eyes on the Stars”, is included within the black universe. This marvellous creation is an ode not only to OMEGA’s space heritage, but also to their skill and ingenuity in the world of precise watchmaking.

Showing OMEGA’s superb attention to detail, the blue nylon fabric strap on which the new OMEGA Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th anniversary watch is worn, matches the other blue elements of the watch, and even features the trajectory of the Apollo 13 mission, embossed on the lining. This strap is attached to a 42 mm case in stainless steel, which is inspired by the 4th generation Speedmaster style- the first watch worn on the moon back in 1969.

In a superb display of OMEGA’s watchmaking skill, this new timepiece is driven by the brand’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. This ground-breaking movement has taken the legendary Moonwatch calibre to new standards of excellence, with its anti-magnetic innovation and Master Chronometer certification from the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).
