TUDOR: A History of Women’s Watches

Ever since the early days of their story, TUDOR has designed accessibly-priced women’s watches, noted for their delicate aesthetic and high technical qualities. In 2019, the brand’s current women’s collection reflects the original vision of founder, Hans Wilsdorf.

Released at the same time as the men’s watches in the early 1930s, the aesthetics of the early ladies TUDOR watches were in line with the fashions of the period. Art Deco in style, their cases were rectangular, barrel-shaped or with bevelled sides. At the crossroads between jewellery and timepieces, TUDOR’s feminine watches were known for their delicacy, reliability and their accessible prices.

Now bearing the rose of the Tudor royal dynasty, the 1940s saw TUDOR’s first waterproof cases, a rare feature at that time. This decade also saw the first of the brand’s advertising campaigns, introducing their cutting-edge technologies to “women who lead active lives” or to those seeking “miniature masterpieces”.

The 1970s saw a greater emphasis on sporting activities, with the presenting of the first divers’ watch dedicated exclusively to women, the Princess Date Submariner. This original tool-watch for women was the first of numerous variations to be produced by TUDOR over the next 40 years.

Today’s collection features the Clair de Rose, a line dedicated entirely to women, worn by Golden Globe winner and BAFTA nominated, Lady Gaga. Its refined and timeless spirit draws on TUDOR’s traditional aesthetic codes, in a case with soft curves and available in three sizes- 26, 30 and 34mm.

Another favourite for the ladies here at DMR is TUDOR’s Black Bay 32 inspired by the very first women’s diver’s watch. Refined yet functional, this 32mm model bears all the historical and technical design codes from the famous Black Bay line, particularly with its characteristic ‘Snowflake’ hands.
