ROLEX AND DMR HOST PATRONS DAY AT ROYAL BIRKDALE

By: Amy Brennan-Stephenson

ROLEX AND DMR HOST PATRONS DAY AT ROYAL BIRKDALE
It is very rare that amateur golfers get the chance to play a round on a course due to be swamped with the international game’s finest players, just a month before they land! But that’s exactly what some lucky friends of DMR had the opportunity to do.

Just over a month before the finest golfers in the world head to Royal Birkdale for ‘The Open Championships’, DMR was privileged to join forces with Rolex and the R&A to host an extra special Patrons Day, on Wednesday.

Making their way from ‘The Vincent’ in The Open Championship’s fleet of cars set to be used by the professionals in July, guests were greeted by the Royal Birkdale team with coffees in the clubhouse, overlooking the splendour of the 18th hole and the mammoth viewing stands erected ahead of the Championships.

Heading across to the practice grounds, our friends were introduced to a very special guest – five-time Open champion Tom Watson. Flying in from the US to host Rolex and DMR on course, Watson was on hand to provide his top tips during a golf clinic, guiding the teams with the techniques recommended for a challenging course.Tom Watson Acknowledging that the game continues to change over time, when questioned about modern players Watson said, “I enjoy watching the kids play. Most of them have a good attitude… it reminds me of me!”

Following a brief stop for lunch, it was time for the DMR Teams to tee off from the first, and head out to play the championship 18-hole course. In groups of four, the teams snaked this world famous course, before Tom Watson met each team at the 14th hole to play through with them. For the keen golfer, the chance to play with this world famous player, was surely the opportunity of a lifetime!

As daylight began to fade over Royal Birkdale, our guests were whisked back to ‘The Vincent’ for a quick relaxation break before heading back to the course for an extra special dinner. Along with senior figures from both Rolex UK and Rolex Geneva, as well as DMR and the R&A, guests enjoyed a fantastic meal, along with a special prize giving ceremony.

DMR would like to thank all of our wonderful guests for joining us on a very special day, as well as passing on our thanks to Rolex, the R&A, Royal Birkdale and, of course, Tom Watson.
