David M. Robinson are thrilled to announce that they have just been granted the Rolex agency for their latest store in Canary Wharf.  Rolex are rightly choosy about where their products are sold and this is a great endorsement for David M. Robinson that they have once again chosen us as a key retail partner for their timepieces.

This announcement means that all seven David M. Robinson stores now are official agents for Rolex.

Two new motor racing-inspired TAG Heuer Carrera watches are being launched, says Simon Revington

TAG Heuer, the company responsible for some of the most elegant and sophisticated sports watches in the world, is releasing two exciting new additions to its exclusive Carrera collection.

The brand has a rich and distinguished association with motor racing, started in 1964 by the launch of the first Heuer Carrera watch as a tribute to the great Carrera Panamericana Mexico Road Race.

Since then the Carrera range has come to embody the finest aspects of motor racing: the passion, excitement and style that form such an intrinsic part of the sport. TAG Heuer has pushed the boundaries yet again with the launch this year of two of their most innovative and stylish sports watches, the Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage and the Grand Carrera Calibre 17 RS2.

The Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage

Both pieces are inspired by and modelled on luxury GT Coupé cars and this is unmistakable in the cool, clear and strong lines that compose the two watches; they form a continuation of the company’s distinguished alliance with motor racing and mark a subtle yet exciting evolution in the Carrera range.

The company is no stranger to pioneering achievements and has been in pole position when it comes to innovation and excellence in design since the brand was launched 150 years ago. The list of landmarks that the company has notched up in its history is a testament to its pursuit of timekeeping perfection; it introduced the oscillating pinion, a key component of the chronometer, as far back as 1886 and continues to break new ground with sophisticated and stylish timepieces that exude authority.

The Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage adds an elegant new edge to the Carrera range with pure, clean lines that convey a powerful presence. With only 6,000 of the watches being made worldwide, it is set to become a mark of individuality that sets the modern man apart by fusing the love and thrill of sport with the innovation and history of a company that has made a habit of capturing the chequered flag. The Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage has a contemporary rhodiumplated hand that counts the seconds from 0 to 30 and another red hand that counts those from 30 to 60, with hand-applied hour markers and double glare proofing on the sapphire-crystal polished hands. The intricacy of the mechanical detail can be seen when looking at the back of the watch; a completely transparent back shows its ‘engine’ and a fascinating assortment of finely-detailed dials and cogs which move with an astounding mechanical refinement. A founding principle of the Carrera collection has been “prestige dedicated to performance” and in this limited edition Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage model, TAG Heuer has produced a timepiece that not only conforms to but exceeds the highest standards of that famous boast. The face design of the watch mirrors the cool, smooth bodywork of a collector’s edition car and the clean design makes the watch attractive with a steely, robust edge. The strap comes in two interchangeable styles – alligator leather or black organic rubber – and represents the two TAG themes of resolutely chic and downright sporty.

Another new addition to the Carrera family is the Grand Calibre 17 RS2 and with it the company has created arguably one of the most robustly handsome luxury sports watches on the market, complete in its definition of unrestrained power. The limited edition timepiece features a grade 2 titanium chassis and has all the hallmarks of the most high-tech GT cars on the road today. It demands respect with an unapologetic display of sophisticated masculine power. The ultra-sleek bodywork is covered with a tough black titanium carbide layer to protect against scratches or damage and this is evocatively offset by the vivid red colour of both the seconds hand and stitching of the strap, the dramatic effect creating a sense of pure strength and speed harnessed in a modern, elegant design. The watch boasts powerful black gold hands and declares its presence in any company with a dominant display of resolve coupled with a burning ambition to race ahead of the competition.

The Grand Carrera Calibre 17 RS2

Looking at the engine of the watch is to see that no detail has been spared in its creation; it is driven by TAG Heuer’s celebrated Rotating System and comes with a highly accurate COSCcertified chronograph movement. Both the Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage and the Calibre 17 RS2 feature distinctly GT race car-inspired, dashboardstyle disks on the face, replacing more traditional watch hands to give a true automobile edge to the design. Both pieces also feature ergonomic designs in a sleek and sheer black body which complements the all-round masculinity of the range and offsets the red second hand, creating the impression of a powerful Gran Turismo odometer. It’s no surprise that prestigious watches like these have prestigious advocates. A glance down the list of some of TAG Heuer’s past and present brand ambassadors and notable enthusiasts reads like a Who’s Who of the modern motor racing world and includes some of the planet’s most successful people. The list includes the likes of motor racing legend Ayrton Senna, Juan-Manuel Fangio, still considered by some to be the greatest driver of all time, current racing sensation Lewis Hamilton, former F1 champion Fernando Alonso, the golfer Tiger Woods and, from among Hollywood’s elite, Brad Pitt.

Precision, prestige and innovation are the three words most closely associated with TAG Heuer timepieces and with the launch of these two additions to the already-impressive Carrerra collection, the company has continued its tradition of excellence while remaining true to its motor racing heritage.

Both watches are superbly crafted and are a worthy investment for anybody who appreciates both the aesthetic beauty of sports racing cars and the elegance and unsurpassed precision of a modern premium timepiece.

The Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage starts at £2,295, while the Grand Carrera Calibre 17 RS2 starts at £3,995

David M. Robinson were very honoured to be the first retailer in the country to showcase the latest creations from Panerai this week.

A select few clients of David M. Robinson were invited to a private dinner at The Four Seasons Hotel in Canary Wharf where they met representatives from Panerai UK and David M. Robinson.  Guests were welcomed with canapes and champagne and then enjoyed a sumptuous dinner during which they had chance to try on the very latest watches that were launched in Geneva in April as well as ask questions of both DMR and Panerai staff.

In Basel, Patek Philippe launched the much anticipated 5070P.

This watch is a maunally wound chronograph from the Calatrava family of watches and is being made for one year only in platinum.

Only certain Patek Philippe retailers will be receiving this watch and the price when it does arrive, will be £46,880.

As an authorised Patek Phlippe retailer, we have been fielding calls and emails about this watch since it's launch in Basle from customers around the world.  It will certainly become a classic in a very short space of time and if you are lucky enough to be offered one, then accept it gratefully with both hands....

After a hectic week, I can now reflect on possibly the most exciting Basel Watch and Jewellery Fairs that I can remember in a long time.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea
The Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea

I can confirm the pre-show rumours about the Rolex Deepsea – the watch forums were full of speculation prior to Basel and I am delighted to say that it is happening later this year.

Without doubt, it was one of my personal favourite watches shown.

" The Swiss watch industry
is achieving extraordinary feats
to push the boundaries of
horology even further."

Paying tribute to the Deep Sea Special from 1960, an experimentalprototype watch which plunged to a depth of 10,916 metres in the Mariana Trench, the new Deepsea surpasses even that.

The new Deepsea will replace the current Sea-Dweller and will be known formally as ‘The Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea’. Waterproof to an incredible 3,900 metres (12,800ft), Rolex has had to overcome considerable challenges to produce this watch and has even developed new machinery in conjunction with Comex (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise) just to be able to fully test each watch’s water resistancy.

The watch has many technical innovations, including the 5mmthick domed sapphire crystal glass and new patented Ringlock system, but the feature that stands head and shoulders above the rest is... the clasp. It sounds strange but it truly is a work of art and really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. It is also the first watch to feature a bracelet with a double extension system, making it easily adaptable for greater comfort over a diving suit.

The watch will retail for £4,750 when released later this year. We still await concrete information about when the first deliveries will be made but I would anticipate seeing the first watches in September.

After its initial preview to select members of the jewellery trade in Dubai back in March, Basel was the official launch of the Mega Port Royal Open Grande Date from Zenith.

The Mega certainly lives up to its name and its huge proportions will be popular among those with a big enough personality to carry it off.

Evolving from the successful Port Royal Open, Zenith has tweaked the design to be more user friendly for the wearer, most notably by placing the power reserve indicator behind the dial – almost in the style of a fuel gauge. It has also included a large date but retained the ‘open’ nature of the watch, whereby you can see into the movement from the front by looking through the dial.

This really does show the craftsmanship of the El Primero movement in all its glory and demonstrates why Zenith is one of only a handful of manufacturers in the Swiss watch industry to make every part from start to finish.

Once again, the first deliveries are due in late 2008, when the price is expected to be £7,500.

After much anticipation and rumour it was confirmed at Basel that Patek Philippe will be releasing the 5070P this year.

The 5070 is a manually-wound chronograph from the Patek Philippe portfolio. Until now, it has only been made in 18ct white and rose gold but this year it will be made in platinum also.

Prices are expected to be in the region of £45,000 when the watch is launched later in the year, but only for those lucky enough to get hold of one. An immediate collectors’ piece, this watch is generating huge demand around the globe, especially in view of recent auction sales where Grand Complication Patek Philippe watches have been making huge premiums over their list price.

As you might anticipate, supply of this watch will be extremely limited and it will be made for just one year. I would suggest that you are very nice to your local Patek Philippe retailer, although he probably has a queue of people outside his door.

Other watches that you should keep an eye out for later in the year include the new Rolex Day-date II, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris limited edition and the Omega Seamaster, James Bond limited edition, amongst many others.

One of the most exciting watches released in recent years by Rolex is due to land any day.  The Rolex Yachtmaster II was launched at the Basle Watch and Jewellery Fair in April and is a significant departure from the current Yachtmaster watch.  With a programmable countdown feature and mechanical memory, it allows the wearer to set the countdown time for each specific regatta.

The Yachtmaster II also comes with the 4160 movement that has been designed and manufactured entirely by Rolex.  This stunning new timepiece is available in either 18ct yellow or 18ct white gold and will be a much sought after model in any worthy watch collection.

Basle is a busy time for most watch brands but this year was a particularly busy period for Breitling.  Amongst the launches on the stand were those for the new Seawolf Chrono and the new Breitling for Bentley GMT.

The new Seawolf Chrono will take over from the current Chrono Avenger in the range but has been vastly updated with a new case, bracelet and dial.

Breitling also chose Basle to add to the Breitling for Bentley range with the Bentley GMT.  Housed in a huge 48mm case with and available in either steel or 18ct rose gold, the watch comes on either bracelet or a fantastic black rubber strap.  The first pieces should be available in late summer.

The case measures a whopping 40mm x 57mm.

Here is what Zenith have to say about the new Mega Port Royal Open Grande Date:

"This year a new model is added to the Port Royal Open in rose gold and stainless steel, already available in two sizes, the Mega Port Royal Open Grande Date. A new vision for the future. This timepiece has a new and more imposing case in brushed steel that stands out and is meant exclusively for strong personalities. The basalt black or metal grey dials are chiseled with geometric perpendicular lines. The power reserve design has been redesigned as a horizontal accelerator pedal picked out with a bright red indicator. These two alternatives are offered with an integral matte rubber strap for a sporty look or in black alligator for a more elegant touch.

Mastering the passage of time is denoted with a day-by-day progression and for this a new complication has been added: the new El Primero 4039 B chronograph, visible as usual through the rectangular opening of the Open at 11 o’clock. It is endowed with a Grande Date whose functioning is made possible thanks to a revolutionary 3-disk patented system."

The watch will be available from November onwards and is a real statement piece.  If you like it largem then maybe you should try the mega!

IWC have just announced one of the forthcoming sets of watches that are due for release at the S.H.H.H. is the 'Father and Son Collection' as part of the celebrations for the IWC 140th anniversary.

They have the same taste in traditional men’s toys. And when the pair go side-by-side through thick and thin, you can rest assured that they are a strong team – father and son, indeed. It is a kind of secret society like no other.

This set will be approximately £27,000 upon release and only 12 sets will make it to the UK. If you would like to be one of only a lucky few owners of this superb box set, then please email karl.irwin@davidmrobinson.co.uk for more information.

It is that time of year again, when the most prestigious watch manufacturers from around the world gather to show off their latest designs.

2nd April sees Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Fair open in the Swiss city of Basel.  From here, famous names in the world of horology such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breilting, TAG Heuer, Omega and dozens of others set trends and define what the public will be wearing on their wrists for years to come.

As usual, rumours are abound of innovative new designs from Rolex and TAG Heuer in particular.  TAG Heuer will probably extend their hugely successful Grand Carrera line which was launched late last year.  Breitling too seem to have a lot of new products due for launch in 2008, with a new ladies watch, high on the agenda.

From Basel, buyers like myself will head to Geneva for the S.I.H.H. where brands such as Cartier, Panerai, Audemars Piquet and IWC exhibit.  Geneva is far more relaxed in comparison to  the madness of Basel.  It is also a lot easier to get a hotel room as well!!!

All in all, it means that April is a very busy month but you can be sure that I will be posting as much information as possible on this site as soon as I get it.

Regards

Karl

The amazing new IWC Top Gun watch has just been released in the UK.  The watch is not a limited edition but will be very limited in production and pieces are due to be extremely scarce.

The watch is an evolution of the hugely successful Double Chronograph Ceramic Pilot's watch from 2006.  The watch is now slightly bigger and is no longer a limited edtion.  The watch is now given to all successful pilots who pass through the US Navy Flight School to become a true Top Gun, of which the logo is placed on the rear of the case of the watch.

The watch retails for £6,350 and although our allocation has been sold for 2007, we are accepting deposits for watches that we are due to receive in 2008.

As part of the close association between Liverpool Football Club and David M. Robinson, we have decided to make an annual award to the player who is recognised as the Player of the Year.  For 2006/07 season, that player was Jamie Carragher, who won for his numerous excellent displays and the way he marshalled the tightest defence in the Premiership.

The award is being sanctioned by Liverpool manager, Raphael Benitez who has agreed to present the award and it is hoped that this will become an annual event in the LFC calendar.

Karl Irwin, Watch Manager for David M. Robinson said "We are delighted to honour a player of Jamie's calibre in this way and it is fantastic that the Manager has given his blessing and support.  Jamie epitomises everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club and hopefully this award goes some way to recognising his efforts."

The watch chosen by Jamie is an IWC Portuguese Chronograph in steel with black dial, which retails for £3,750.

We are delighted to announce that David M. Robinson have just received the latest IWC Perpetual Calendar II in 18ct Rose Gold.  The watch has been delivery earlier than we anticipated and a very lucky customer will soon be the proud owner of this much sought after timepiece.  The specification of the watch is as follows:

- Mechanical movement
- Automatic Pellaton winding system
- Seven-day power reserve
- Power reserve display
- Perpetual calendar with displays for the day, date, month, year in four digits and perpetual moon phase
- Off-centre small seconds hand with stop function
- Breguet spring
- Convex sapphire glass
- Sapphire glass back
- Water-resistant 30 m

The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar has just about everything you could possibly wish for: a perpetual calendar, a perpetual moon phase display, a window showing the year in four digits, a seven-day automatic movement with Pellaton winding system and a power reserve display. The view of the lunar phases is reminiscent of classical representations of the moon, whose waxing and waning is due to the presence of two semi-circles. This is the method chosen by watchmakers over the centuries to depict the "celestial arena" in gold. In view of the extra space available in the large movement, the moon phase wheels in the IWC perpetual calendar now have more teeth, making the mechanism one of the most accurate available. After 577.5 years, it will deviate by just one day from the moon's actual progress. It is a modern and elegant timepiece that can hardly be bettered. The case is two millimetres less in diameter than that of its predecessor, a small modification that makes a visible difference on the wearer's wrist.

When shopping for a Rolex, it is always best to have a look around and ask the question "Who do Rolex trust to sell and service their watches?"  The answer in Liverpool and many other cities across the nothwest of England is David M. Robinson Ltd.

We have been around for nearly 40 years and for a large portion of this time, we have been partners with Rolex.  Rolex are rightly very choosy about who is granted the prestigious position of being a Rolex Authorised Retailer.  In Liverpool, that honour is held exclusively by David M. Robinson who is allowed to sell Rolex watches from our Church Alley and North John Street stores.

Many so called 'experts' suggest that they are the people to talk to about Rolex but we think that it is safe to deal with the people that Rolex choose - David M. Robinson

Please visit www.rolex.com for more information

A Rolex is a precise mechanical instrument similar in may ways to a performance car.  Like a car, a Rolex or other fine timepiece requires regular maintenance and servicing to keep it working in great condition and running as it should.  Also like a car, a Rolex should be serviced and maintained by experts who have the equipment and expertise.

Rolex are very particular about who is authorised to work on their timepieces and both our technicians and their workshops undergo regular visits by management from Rolex that they meet the exacting standards laid down by Geneva.  At present David M. Robinson have Rolex approved technicians and workshops in both our North John Street and Manchester stores.  Our technicians are quite happy to discuss any areas of concern with customers and advise accordingly should a problem arise.

Keep your Rolex serviced regularly and it will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.

Few people can argue that the internet has been anything but a revelation over the last ten years or so.  It has completely changed the way we book travel arrangements, pay bills, control our finances and shop.  The vast majority of times, the change has been for the better but con-men lurk around every corner and the anonymity afforded to them has made the internet a very dangerous place to make expensive transactions.

Famous brands as we have discussed in previous articles are often copied and the differences between the real and the fake are very hard to tell from a grainy picture on a computer.  We have had a lot of people approach David M. Robinson to verify the authenticity of watches purchased from various web sites.  The majority of the watches we see are fakes and the buyer then has the difficult task of trying to obtain a refund from a website or a PO Box number!

Patek Philippe, Breitling, TAG Heuer, IWC, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Omega and Panerai are all targeted by the fraudsters because of their high quality and desirability.

Virtually all of the best known Swiss watch houses forbid authorised agents from selling their products on the web.  This is for a few very good reasons.  They want customers to have full reassurance should anything go wrong with their watch .  They want customers to touch and feel happy with their purchase prior to walking out of the store.  They want customers to choose from a full range and be informed by well trained sales staff about their prospective purchase.  Most of all they want the customer to be sure that they are buying a genuine product that should last a lifetime not a cheap copy that will fall about soon after walking out of the shop.

Before spending your hard earned cash on what appears to be the deal of the century, just ask the following questions:

1) Is the retailer an authorised agent for the brand?
2) Is the watch case and movement genuine?
3) Does the watch come with a full manufacturers guarantee? (Most will not touch a watch if not stamped by an authorised agent)
4) What happens if there is a problem with my watch?
5) Where are the company based and is their address bona fide?
6) Can I handle the watch prior to purchase and ensure it is the one for me?
7) Who will fit the bracelet for me?  (Many authorised agents charge for this if not bought from a authorised agent)
8) Is the watch second hand or does the guarantee contain the name of a previous purchaser? (Your name may not be the one in the guarantee)
9) Will the site still be trading in a few months?
10) Why are this site allowed to sell the watch when authorised agents are forbidden?
11) Is the watch definitely in stock? (Certain web sites source watches only after receiving your order, only to find that the watch is unavailable)
12) Does the web site offer extended guarantees or finance packages?

We all like to get a bargain but that bargain can often be a very expensive mistake and can often work out far more expensive in the long term.

If you have any points or questions raised in this article, please feel free to contact me via karl@davidmrobinson.co.uk and I will be delighted to help in any way possible.

Valencia, Spain - Following an epic battle with Team New Zealand, the Swiss entry - Alinghi has managed to retain the America's Cup.  Alinghi sponsored by Audemars Piguet came from trailing 2-1 to win the contest 5-2.

The final was the most dramatic in recent history with both teams suffering from tactical errors and equipement failure.  Team New Zealand are now left to pnder what they have to do to wrestle the America's Cup from the arms of Alinghi.  After coming through the qualifying competition in style, Team New Zealand had high hope heading into the final - only for these to be dashed by the efforts of the Alinghi Team.

By conicidence, David M. Robinson have just supplied the first Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph 2007 watch to come into the UK.  This is a real coup for David M. Robinson who are a very proud partner of Audemars Piguet and very excited to be chosen to be given the first watch into the country. A first in watchmaking, this watch made from forged carbon, with other versions available in rose gold and platinum.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finished third in the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours and took his eighth podium finish in the eighth race of the season. After 70 laps, Lewis came home 32.1 seconds behind winner Kimi Raikkonen meaning that he maintained the lead in the Drivers’ Championship with 64 points ahead of his first home Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend.

I’m pleased to have finished third today and have continued my run of podium finishes in Formula 1,” he said. “I didn’t have the best start and I don’t know exactly what the reason was. My car was very good in the opening stage of the race, and I pushed hard to get past Kimi, but unfortunately it didn’t work out. We opted for a three-stop strategy. I am happy for my team as we are still heading both the drivers’ and constructors’ rankings. We will now focus on the British Grand Prix next week where I think we will be competitive again. I am confident for a better weekend at my home Grand Prix as everybody in the team has worked very hard for this, as we do for every race."

Meanwhile, teammate Fernando Alonso, who had started 10th on the grid following a gearbox problem in qualifying, ended up seventh and the Spaniard remains second in the standings with 50 points as a result. Although he gave 110% out there today, Fernando knew it was going to be a tough afternoon and while somewhat disappointed he knows all he can do now is look ahead, not back…

Both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are TAG Heuer ambassadors and Hamilton can currently be seen wearing the latest F1 Chronograph in orange.

David M. Robinson were delighted to assist when asked to help DJ Spoony to raise funds for junior golf.

Every year DJ Spoony holds The Spoony Classic Golf Day at Stoke Park golf club.  Spoony is assisted in this cause by a host of friends from the world of TV and radio as well as the European Tour.  This year was no different with teams of celebrities and pros and amateurs raising over £73,000 for the charity.

David M. Robinson helped by contributing a TAG Heuer Professional golf watch for the evening auction and raffle.  Incredibly this was won by DJ Spoony himself with a ticket that was bought by his sister!  Of course Spoony did the right thing and asked for auction bids on the watch.  The auction raised £1,600 plus money raised on the original raffle to bring the total to over £5,000.

And in the words of Sponny himself "Keep swinging".
